2018 was a year of change for our family. But something that didn’t change was my love of makeup! So I had to share my faves of the year– both high end and drugstore. There were so many products I loved this year, that I decided to break it up in two posts. Today, you’ll find primers, foundations, concealers, powders, bronzers, blush, highlighters, and finishing spray. Everything you’ll need for a flawless skin finish! Coming next week will be eyes, lips, brows, and my favorite tools! Keep reading! Love yall!
Benefit Pore fessional Primer. $32. My biggest issue with my skin (other than hormonal breakouts) is my pore size. This stuff is like spackle. It gives my skin a smoothed out appearance and provides a great base for my makeup.
Morphe Contiunous Setting Mist. $16. This is a good hack for the girl who wants to be able to use one item for multiple things: instead of buying a primer AND a setting spray, try this one from Morphe and spray it on your skin (allow to dry) and give your skin a good base to start.
Urban Decay Optical Illusion Primer. $36. This is my other favorite complexion perfecting primer of the year. It’s the most expensive on the list, but it makes a huge difference in my pores and the texture of my skin before makeup. It’s a winner for me!
Mary Kay Mineral Powder Foundation. $20. This is my ride or die that I’ve been using for almost 10 years. I particularly use it during the summer when this dirty south heat makes me sweat all day. Because it’s a matte powder finish, it doesn’t run or blotch. It’s also buildable so I can use different layers depending on my skin needs. I also love the fact that I can touch up during the day. I’ve tried many Mineral Foundations and this one is hands down.. the BEST.
Loreal Infallible Pro-Matte. $12.99. Yall. For less than fifteen bucks, this one was a shocker. I’m combo-oily skin so I chose the Matte, but there’s also a “glowy” option if you’re on the dry side. This foundation dried down to a beautiful finish. I would definitely recommend this to my full coverage girls who don’t want to break the bank.
Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation. $42. This is it girls. If you want a full coverage, beautiful matte finish, that lasts all day… look no further. This is not my everyday foundation, but it could be. I love this for a special event or a day that I know my makeup needs to SLAY all day. This one has been around for awhile, and I was just late to the game– but my acne and huge pores bow down to this queen. She’s a beauty and worth every penny.
Tarte Shape Tape Concealer. $27. Run, don’t walk, to Ulta and grab this baby if you’ve never tried it. It is the most pigmented, long wearing, non-creasing, full coverage concealer that I have EVER used in my life. I use this after primer to cover my blemishes before I put on my foundation (I apply by sheering it out with a damp beauty blender), and then under my eyes to brighten everything up. It’s amazing and you won’t convince me otherwise. #sorrynotsorry
Colourpop No Filter Concealer. $6. This is an AMAZING dupe for the Shape Tape. I would recommend this for my dry-combo sisters because it is a little more hydrating than Shape Tape (if you get oily through the day, make sure to set this one really well). It’s got great coverage, a large shade range, and long wearing power. I mean, for 6 bucks you canNOT go wrong! Well done, Colourpop.
Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder. $39. This is pretty standard in the beauty community as one of the top setting products that you can buy. This is a beautiful, finely ground, smoothing translucent setting powder. I use this primarily to set my under eye (it can be used all over the face for baking). It brightens, smooths, and keeps my concealer from creasing ALL DAY. It’s for any skin tone or type and it doesn’t give any white cast or flashback. It’s worth the money if you want you makeup to stay PUT.
Airspun Loose Face Powder. $5.99. I’m gonna be honest… this one had me shook. I had seen several beauty influencers reaching for this, and the minute I opened it– the smell hit me in the face like a ton of bricks. There is no denying the fact that my Grandma Wilson actually used this powder. I wouldn’t forget that smell anywhere. So, the fragrance is strong– but let me tell you– even though this is LITERALLY my grandmother’s makeup– its BOMB. If you don’t have the 40 bucks to drop on powder– this is a great drugstore option. Beautiful finish, no white cast or flashback. You nailed it, granny!
Maybelline Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder. $7.99. Okay. This may be the queen of this category. I’m not kidding. I’ve got my mom and my sister using this stuff and it’s literally 8 bucks. I apply this lightly all over my face on days that I wear a liquid foundation or CC cream, and I apply using my damp beauty sponge. It smooths, hides my pores, and reduces the appearance of my blemishes. This one’s a game changer– and it’s at your drugstore.
Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer. $8.89. This bronzer takes you to the BEACH! If you don’t like fragrance in your makeup, this one’s not for you– but its infused with Murumuru butter that gives you that tropical vibe. “A glow from within,” if you will. Its a great color for my pale skin, but it brings warmth and life into my face after I cover my blemishes with a flat base of foundation. This is another drugstore WIN that I know you’ll love.
Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Bronzer. $42. Okay, this one was nowhere on my radar, but now I use it everyday. I actually received a sample of this when I purchased my Double Wear foundation one day, and the color looked interesting- so I gave it a try. This is a BEAUTIFUL product. You know how some bronzers make you look muddy? Especially on my pale skin! Not this girl– she’s a goddess through and through. It’s easily blendable, it’s buildable, and it doesn’t move throughout the day. I will keep using this product for a long time.
Maybelline Master Chrome Metallic Highlighter. $9.99. Honestly.. this was the only highlighter I wanted to put on this list. I’m almost certain that I have used this every single day in 2018. It’s so so gorgeous. It’s buildable if you want that BLINDING glow, or if you just want to bring a little light and life to your face like I do– one layer and you’re glowing from within. I’m in love with this drugstore highlighter, and I think it belongs in everyone’s collection. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Dose of Colors Desi X Katy Highlighter in Fuego. $28. This is from a collab with YouTubers Katy Degroot and Desi Perkins, and I love them and DOC- so I decided to give it a try. This is a BEAUTIFUL highlight and especially when I’m a little more tan in the summer, it’s fire. For my medium-deep toned sisters, this is a GORG everyday highlighter for you. Plus, the packaging will make your heart thump. I believe this is limited edition, so get it before it’s gone.
Covergirl Cheekers Blush. $4.99. I’m gonna be really honest. I probably spend the least amount of money in my entire makeup routine on blush. I don’t use a ton of it, I just like a rosy glow on my cheeks, and it usually fades throughout the day. So one day I grabbed this one from Cover Girl, and I’ve actually been reaching for it quite often. Sometimes I’ll even dip my brush lightly in my highlighter and then into this color, and it brightens me and gives me that extra glow.
Milani Baked Blush. $7.99. I actually really loved this blush. It’s has a beautiful color range, goes on really smoothly, shimmery, and it’s buildable. Once again- I don’t really spend a lot of time or money on my blush– but it’s something that can’t be forgotten. Once I prime, add foundation, powder, and bronzer– blush is the one thing that kind of ties me all together. Get your rosy glow on girl… without breaking the bank.
Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray. $32. Do not pass go, do not collect $200– this is a MUST have– no ifs ands buts about it! Have I made myself clear? Okay now I’m getting pushy. But really! My makeup is not complete until this is sprayed on my face. Why would you do all the hard work you just did and then not lock it up?? I spray this after I’ve set my foundation with powder.. let it dry. I spray this after my bronzer, blush, and highlight… let it dry. Then wrap up the rest of your makeup and spray it again. I LOVE this final step and I can tell a MARKED difference when I don’t use it. Other than the Morphe spray mentioned above… this is it for me. I don’t want to try anything else, I’ve found my unicorn. #dramaticbutreally
